- It is likely, but not yet confirmed, that the Hunter ANZAC Memorial Limited (HAML) will be given the lease of the Scheyville site. Should this occur, HAML will turn the site into a military history site and set up a museum and some military displays around the grounds. In case they do get the ‘nod’ they have begun getting as much military history of Scheyville as they can. The National Committee has been able to answer most questions asked, but two that we are unsure of are:
The history of the cannon on the Parade Ground (not the painting of the cannon pink), and
was an OTU Flag flown at Scheyville (or just the ANF)?
Please advise The Editor if you have any information on these topics.
- I am working with a current serving Army member who is based at Puckapunyal and has put together a military history of Seymour and Puckapunyal up to 1969. He is now looking at the next stage of this history.
There were five trees planted at 2 RTB. One had a plaque placed on a rock and it was located where the red circle is on the attached aerial photo of Pucka. Just on the creek side of the road to the East of the Parade ground. I hope the attachment opens!
Four of the plaques read:
- Planted By: The MASTER GENERAL OF ORDNANCE, Maj Gen C E Long
On the occasion of his reviewing the March Out Parade of
National Service Intake 3/67 Sunday 17 September 1967
2. Planted By: The CMF MEMBER OF THE MILITARY BOARD, Maj Gen N A Vickery
On the occasion of his reviewing the March Out Parade of
National Service Intake 2/68 Sunday 14 July 1968
3. Planted By: The MINISTER OF STATE FOR THE ARMY, The Hon Phillip Lynch
On the occasion of his reviewing the March Out Parade of
National Service Intake 3/68 Sunday 22 September 1968
4. Planted By: The GOC Southern Command, Maj Gen R W Knights
On the occasion of his reviewing the March Out Parade of
National Service Intake 1/69 Monday 9 April 1969
5. A 5th tree was planted by LTGEN Ned Herring. WW2 Corps Commander in New Guinea and later the Lieutenant Governor of Victoria for over 25 years. The plaque has been located, but I have not been given the wording.
If you have any information on where the other trees might have been planted, or even if you were there, but can’t remember where it happened, please advise The Editor.
